CORN SOWING

Siembra de maiz

When planting corn, the motto is: “As soon as possible, as late as necessary.” If the soil is warm, well dry and load-bearing and the soil temperature has reached 8-10°C, then under normal conditions sowing is carried out from mid-April to mid-May.

In general, maize is planted between 3 and 5 cm deep in rows, and with the distance between each row adjusted depending on the harvesting equipment, regional preferences, and the type and final use of the maize. Corn for grain is normally cultivated with a distance between the rows of 50 to 120cm.

In Spain, a soil that is warm (temperature has reached 8-10ºC), dry and load-bearing, can be achieved from April to mid-May, although it depends on the climatic zone. Therefore, during those months is when the corn should be planted. .

How much time elapses between planting and harvesting corn?

Depending on the purpose for which it has been sown, harvesting is done between 100 and 150 days after sowing, when the ears are tender and soft.
